The Body Story by Riitta M Lahtinen & Russ C Palmer

Russ Palmer has co-authored this new book and DVD with Riitta Lahtinen titled The Body Story – Creative Musical Images Through Touch (CMIT). A definitive, new non-verbal approach for the sensory impaired, their families and carers - a book that improves communication, relaxation and contact sharing music and vibrations through touch. It explores how to develop and process some basic elements into Storytelling techniques, which can be applied in therapy and educational settings.

The main emphasis of this book and DVD is to learn how to relax your body senses and create your own Body Stories using a combination of hand contact, and movements through using touch. Although a new work, this book encompasses ideas explored by Lahtinen in Social-Haptic Interactive Communication and by Palmer in Feeling The Music Philosophy. The authors have together over 40 years of research and practice behind them.

One leading international Music Therapist, Professor Clive Robbins (Founder of the International Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centres) quoted the book as below:

"The Body Story is an amazing piece of work and arouses so many questions in my mind…The whole thing is a fascinating area of exploration! I feel sure it would take us into some quite new perceptions of how the human sensorium relates to the finding of meaning."

Professor Clive Robbins, Founder of the International Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centres, New York

Russ produced the artwork for the book with additional support from the Finnish Deafblind Association. The DVD includes some of his musical compositions and is published by A1 Management UK. He hopes to attract further interests from a larger publisher. There has been some positive responses from music therapy associations in Finland and Italy with the possibility of the book and DVD being published in Italian by a music therapy association. The book is targeted for parents, carers, therapy and educational areas.
