Setting Off with Words and Signs
This booklet has been written for the families and carers of pre-school children with cochlear implants. We want to help you to make the most of this exciting technology to develop your child's potential to listen and talk. This information is written particularly for those of you whose children have already learnt to communicate using some signs or by attempting or using spoken words and have now received a cochlear implant.
Your child is likely to be at least two, and may have got some benefit from hearing aids. If your child is not making much use of their voice, even if they have lots of signs, you need to start by reading the 'Sound Start' book and looking at the 'Small Talk' and 'STEPS' packs.
This booklet will also be of benefit to those families whose children had an operation some time ago and are now saying their first words.
Produced in collaboration with Gill Datta of the Nottingham Cochlear Implant Programme.
