Parental Perspectives

The parent questionnaire, Children with cochlear implants: parental perspectives, was developed jointly by Sue Archbold, at Nottingham Cochlear Implant Programme, Queen’s Medical Centre University Hospital NHS Trust, and Mark Lutman, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton. It was externally validated by Nunes and Pritzlik, Oxford Brookes University, with a grant from RNID.

Two papers describe its development and several researchers in Europe are using it for further study.

Archbold S M, Lutman M E, Gregory S, O’Neill C, Nikolopoulos T, (2002) Parents and Their Deaf Child: their perceptions three years after cochlear implantation. Deafness & Educational International. Volume 4, Issue 1, pages 12 - 40.

At The Ear Foundation, our Family Education Coordinators run courses for parents on developing early communication with their deaf child; the initial courses and the research to evaluate them, was funded by the Department of Health. The research showed that the parent courses resulted in positive changes in parent and child communication styles, measured by analysis of video and by profiles and questionnaires. These changes were robust, and remained over time.
