Parent Questionnaire

The parent questionnaire, Children with cochlear implants: parental perspectives, was developed jointly by Sue Archbold, at Nottingham Cochlear Implant Programme, Queen’s Medical Centre University Hospital NHS Trust, and Mark Lutman, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton. It was externally validated by Nunes and Pritzlik, Oxford Brookes University, with a grant from RNID.

Two papers describe its development and several researchers in Europe are using it for further study.

Archbold S M, Lutman M E, Gregory S, O’Neill C, Nikolopoulos T P (2002) Parents and Their Deaf Child: Their Perceptions Three Years after Cochlear Implantation. Deafness & Education International. 4(1); pp 12-40.

O’Neill C, Lutman M E, Archbold S M, Gregory S, Nikolopoulos TP (2004) Parents and Their Cochlear Implanted Child: Questionnaire development to assess parental views and experiences. Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol. Feb; 68(2): 149-160.

A database is available to store responses to the Parent Questionnaire and has been designed to facilitate storage and analysis of the questionnaire data. By defining a uniform storage format, the database will also facilitate sharing data collected at different cochlear implant centres.

Responses are entered via the database application and also scored along the dimensions described in the questionnaire manual. The names of the child and respondent are encrypted in the database. They can only be viewed after entering the correct password. In this way, data may be shared in an anonymous format, thus preserving patient confidentiality.

The database software is freely available for use by centres using the questionnaire. The software may be downloaded by clicking on the download link and following the instructions on the download page.
