Adult CI Strategy Reports

Our Action Group for Adult Cochlear Implantation is led by Brian Lamb, and includes representatives from Action on Hearing Loss, British Academy of Audiology, British Society of Audiology, British Cochlear Implant Group, Cochlear Implanted Children’s Support Group, The Ear Foundation, Hearing Link, National Cochlear Implant Users Association, National Association of Deafened People, and cochlear implant centres throughout the UK. It brings together clinicians, health professionals, researchers, charities, and cochlear implant users who share a common commitment to make cochlear implants available to all adults who could benefit.

Less than 10% of adults  who could benefit from an implant receive one; yet the benefits are proven. Hearing loss in adulthood has a huge impact: “I lost my self esteem: that’s what deafness does to you.”  Cochlear implantation has been shown to be cost effective and  to transform lives............ “My cochlear implant allowed me to return to a life I thought was over....”

With our ageing population and increasing need to be able to continue working and communicating, the need for improving hearing services has never been greater, and we welcome the NHS Action Plan on Hearing Loss.
