Summer Event for Teenz
Ten implant users aged between 11 and 14 gathered at The Ear Foundation early on July 31st for two days of non-stop fun and action!
The first day saw us swinging from high ropes in the pouring rain at Thornbridge Outdoors Centre in Derbyshire and then in the afternoon doing team building games on the low ropes.
In between these two activities we managed to fit in a game of football with a group of international students from many different countries round the world.
In the evening Kim Veekmans from Nottingham Cochlear Implant Programme kindly gave a talk on using implants with mobile phones, iPods and other external devices.
After that we divided into two teams for quiet and loud games of various types. Bed came soon after but sleep came much, much later!
On the second day we visited Patchings Farm Art Centre for two hours doing aboriginal paintings and then in the afternoon The Ear Foundation building started to vibrate with the sound of drums.
The Therapeutic Drumming Foundation did a session with everyone on drums which just proved to be the most popular activity with staff and young people alike, although there were a few adults popping paracetamol by the end!
Feedback from the participants and from the staff was extremely positive. Here are some of the young people’s comments:
“Drumming is fantastic.”
“Can we come for a week next year?”
“I loved doing dots in the art.”
“What I enjoyed most was doing games to help the people work like a team.”
We all really enjoyed the two days and are all looking forward to the next Teenz event!
