Children with Cochlear Implants: Slow to Progress

June 19, 2017

Time09.30 to 16.00
Duration1 day
VenueThe Ear Foundation, Nottingham, UK
TicketsStandard Professional : £85.00
Second Ticket : £10.00

Although the outcomes for cochlear implantation in terms of speech perception, production and spoken language development have surpassed expectations, there are significant numbers of children who do not do as well as expected. Research indicates that up to 40% of these children will have additional needs. With increasingly early implantation these may well not be identified or indeed become apparent until after implantation. This day will consider possible causes of slow progress and ways of monitoring and assessing.  Once identified, the course will consider how children can be supported to reach their potential listening with a Cochlear Implant through the use of practical strategies and functional goals.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Know from research, the  expected rate of progress after implantation
  • Identify useful tools for assessment and monitoring of progress
  • Recognise causes of slow progress, what you can and can’t change
  • Generate practical strategies for working with these children
  • Apply learning to children you support
