Course suitable for: Teachers of the Deaf, Speech & Language Therapists and other professionals supporting deaf children at secondary school
Although youngsters who were implanted before starting school and have made excellent progress with their spoken language development research is showing that this group is challenging how we have traditionally supported them within the secondary environment. This day will explore a number of the areas in which support needs have changed and offer practical suggestions.
This course will give you:
~ An update on the current practice in this population and how this may change at secondary school. ~ Time to think about the challenges at secondary level and overview of issues with this age group. ~ Opportunities to explore issues around encouraging higher levels of language, including assessing ongoing progress at secondary school. ~ Practical ways to develop complex language skills. ~ Opportunities to think about the listening environment in the classroom. ~ An overview of what they are really hearing with their cochlear implants and other technology such as FM systems. ~ An update on a study looking at young People’s views about support at secondary school and their implants ~ Opportunities for group discussion and review of case studies.
